マイクロソフト、HD-DVD採用メーカーにキャッシュバック

News.com経由EE Timesによると、マイクロソフトはHD-DVDを採用したハードウェアメーカーにキャッシュインセンティブを提供する計画。

HD-DVDの採用を後押しするために、HD-DVDドライブを搭載したPCに対しては「クーポン」のかたちでWindowsのライセンス料を値引きするという。MSは取材に対してコメントを拒否しているが、EE TimesはHD-DVD「も」採用すると発表したHPの動きはこのインセンティブによるものと報じている。またHPのソースによれば、次期WindowsであるVistaではHD-DVDサポートは無償で提供される一方、Blu-rayについては$30の追加料金が(ハードウェアメーカーに対して)発生するとのこと。

$30の価格差は東芝とMSの関係で合理的に説明できないでもないものの(MSにとって追加料金なしで使えるIPがあればそれだけHD-DVDのほうが安くなる)、MSにとってHD-DVDは想像以上に重要らしい。なぜそこまで？
