ピンポン球ディスプレイ装置ピンポンピクセル

2700個のピンポン球を敷き詰めて画像を表示する新ディスプレイ方式「Ping Pong Pixel」(PPP)。2メートル×3メートルのディスプレイユニットとボールを並べて送り込むドライブユニットからなり、6種類のボールを用いて6階調表示が可能。実効表示領域は240×180cmとあるので解像度はたぶん60×45(ピンポン)ピクセル。作動中の動画はこちら。

PPPと既存のディスプレイ方式と比較した利点はいわゆる電子インク同様画像の保持に電力を表示しないこと。欠点はカラー表示を実現するためにはドライブユニットがとんでもないサイズになること、原理的にリフレッシュレートがやや遅く0.00011Hz (または2時間半に1枚)程度なこと、横一列ごとに上から画素を落とすためやや作動音が大きいこと、たまに画素詰まりが発生すること。

動画表示などにはやや不向きですが、新ディスプレイを探していたかたは熱いディスプレイDPMともどもご検討ください。
