Google、地元マウンテンビュー市に無償WiFiネットワークを完成

Googleが地元Mountain Viewに構築していた無線LANネットワークが完成、7万2000人の市民全員に(ほぼ)どこでも使える無料インターネットアクセスの提供を開始しました。

380カ所の街灯にアンテナを設置しておよそ30平方kmほどの市内90%をカバーするもの。Googleは100万ドル程度の設置費用を負担し、街灯一本につき年間$36の使用料を市に収めることになります。

転送速度はいまのところ1Mbpsに抑えられていますが、需要があればさらに高速化できるとのこと。Googleがわざわざ無料で市民全員に無線LANアクセスを提供する理由については諸説あるものの、地元コミュニティへの貢献はもちろん、市内在住の従業員約1000人に便利だから・EarthLinkと共同で受注したサンフランシスコWiFiのような都市WiFi化事業の研究のため・世界征服のテストベッドと説明されています。市内なら場所を気にせずにソニーmyloやWiFI Skypeフォン、量産準備中のGoogle Talk携帯が使えるのはうらやましい話です。

日本をテストベッドにしたほうが役に立つと思うけど
