Wii 用Modチップが登場？
Modchipとは：Modification(改造)チップの略。ゲーム機のプロテクトを回避して正規ライセンス品以外のソフトを起動可能にするハードウェア。オリジナルゲームをDVD-Rなどに焼いたコピー、あるいはリージョン制限で起動できない海外版の正規品ソフト、あるいは自作ソフトなどを動かす目的で使われる。
というわけで、任天堂のWiiでコピーの起動を可能にするというModチップ"Wiinja"なるものが現れています。リンク先公式サイトによれば日米欧すべてのリージョンのWii本体に取り付けることができ、DVD-Rに焼いたゲームのダイレクト起動が可能。他リージョンの場合はスワップ(ディスク入れ替え)起動。取り付けはWii本体を開けて5カ所をハンダ付けする必要あり。DVD-Rに焼いたWiiソフトを起動してみせるデモ動画はこちら。
映像だけではなんともいえないところですが、すでに複数の小売業者が予約を受け付けているようです。価格は40ユーロ(6000円ほど)。
宣伝通りに機能するとしてインストールにはある程度の技術が必要、本体の保証は当然無効になる、実装によってはWii本体のオンラインアップデートで無効化されるかもしれないなどとても一般向けとはいえない製品ながら、海外リージョンの輸入ゲームを遊びたいときには役に立つかもしれません。
