The popular free battle royale game Fortnite has announced the "Fortnite Crew" monthly subscription plan.

For 1,320 yen ($11.99) per month, you can get a Battle Pass + Monthly Crew Pack, a set of monthly items including exclusive costumes + 1,000 V-Bucks in-game currency, a so-called subscription/monthly billing plan.

It starts on December 2, when the next season begins. The first crew pack includes Galaxia, a limited edition costume with a galaxy spreading in black, the Cosmic Llamacorn pickaxe, and the Fractured World, a fractured earth-like back accessory.

Fortnite is a basic free game. Although there are many free games, Fortnite's gameplay itself is completely free and without disadvantage, and in-app purchases provide cosmetic items that change the appearance of outfits and items, as well as emotes such as dancing.

The traditional Battle Pass is content that, once purchased, unlocks items and privileges as you play. Some costumes and items can only be purchased individually, some are included in the Battle Pass, and some are only available with the Battle Pass.

The content breakdown for the Fortnite Crew is as follows

  • Battle Pass 950 V-Bucks

  • Limited edition item set "Crew Pack"

  • 1000 V-Bucks

The Battle Pass is priced at 950 V-Bucks per season for less than three months, which is less than 1,000 yen in real-world terms (because the V-Bucks/yen rate changes slightly depending on payment methods, bulk purchases, etc.).

If the duration of a season is 75 days, it is the equivalent of 380 V-Bucks per month, because the season's Battle Pass is always valid while joining the Fortnite Crew.

The price of the in-game currency, V-Bucks, is 880 yen for 1000 V-Bucks, and if you buy in bulk, the rate decreases to 8800 yen for 13500 V-Bucks. That means 1 V-Bucks is 0.88 yen to 0.65 yen.

With the Fortnite Crew, you can get crew-only costumes and items and roughly 1,380 V-Bucks worth, or around 1,215 yen, for 1,320 yen a month. (If you buy the maximum amount of V-Bucks in bulk, it's around 900 yen).

Costumes available in the store range from about 800 to 2000 V-Bucks, depending on rarity, although limited items are a bit harder to replace in value because they are not sold in V-Bucks.

In other words, Fortnite Crew is a monthly subscription for avid players, which means that if you're buying single items as well as Battle Pass bills, you'll save money for a set of items you can't get elsewhere for a small difference.

According to the FAQ, limited items are not sold or offered to non-Crew members, although they may be redistributed once. In other words, they are really crew-only, rather than a pre-ordered limited edition that can be purchased individually if you wait.

If you cancel, the season's Battle Pass that started at that point is valid until the end of the season, and V-Bucks and Crew Pack items can still be used once they're acquired.
