Electric car venture Lucid Motors, whose CEO and CTO is Peter Rawlinson, who once led the Tesla Model S development project, has announced a production version of its Model S rival, the Lucid Air, a sedan-like EV.

Lucid Motors has been revealing a bit of information about the Air, and has been touting it as an improvement over the Tesla Model S. If this is set to be slightly cheaper than the Model S... some of you may have been keeping an eye on it, but now it's been revealed that the announced production price for the base grade "The Air" will be below $80,000.

$80,000 is more expensive than the Tesla Model S base grade (about $75,000), but it will be interesting to see how much of a range the " below" is.

The Lucid Air is available in four model ranges, with the least expensive, The Air (range undisclosed), which will cost less than $80,000, and the well-equipped Air Touring (406 miles, 654 km), starting at $95,000. The fully equipped Air Grand Touring (517 miles, 832 km), will cost $139,000, while the all-inclusive, limited-volume Air Dream Edition (465-503 miles, 748-810 km) will cost $169,000.

Deliveries will begin with the higher-end models, with the earliest Dream Edition starting in spring 2021. The Air will have to wait until 2022.

According to Lucid, the base model of The Air will also come standard with advanced features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping, automatic emergency braking, and automatic parking features. It will also be one of the first production cars to be equipped with standard LIDAR - a laser-based sensor that detects objects, including obstacles and pedestrians, as part of its collision avoidance system with other vehicles.

Led by CEO Rawlinson, who has had a brilliant career with Lotus to Jaguar to Tesla, Lucid Motors is the only company that seems to have accumulated the know-how to develop a higher performance EV than Tesla.

"Lucid Motors is driven to make the electric car better, and by doing so, help move the entire industry forward towards accelerated adoption of sustainable mobility," said Rawlinson.

Lucid Air's proprietary "Lucid Space Concept" makes the electric drivetrain smaller and utilizes that extra space for the interior. This concept is central to the architecture of the Lucid Electric Advanced Platform (LEAP) upon which the Lucid Air and the new model, which has a glimpsed SUV-type body, and is designed from scratch specifically for electric vehicles, rather than imitating existing vehicle designs. It is explained that by doing so, it allows for a modern design that is subtly different from that of conventional cars and provides a unique look and feel to the car on the road.

The dual-motor, AWD Lucid Air, which also produces up to 1080 horsepower, accelerates from 0 to quarter-mile in 9.9 seconds. To date, it is the only EV sedan able to achieve a quarter-mile time under 10 seconds (the Tesla Model S is in the 10-second range).

If the energy release (acceleration) is the best, the energy storage is also a concern, and with a DC fast-charging facility (350 kW fast-charging facility from Electrify America in the U.S.), the vehicle can be charged with enough power to travel up to 20 miles per minute, and in 30 minutes it's almost full. The battery is based on the know-how Lucid gained when it provided standard batteries for Formula E under its predecessor name Atieva.

The Lucid Dream Drive driver assistance system (ADAS) is also standard the Lucid Air Dream Edition. It is a "first-of-its-kind platform" that combines a suite of sensors (camera, radar, and ultrasound) with high-resolution LiDAR and a driver monitoring system (DMS) that also utilizes geo-fenced HD mapping to provide the safest possible approach to Level 2 and Level 3 driver assistance technologies, said Lucid.

In terms of power output, for example, the Air Turing has 620 hp and the Air Grand Turing has 800 hp, while the Dream Edition is capable of a maximum output of 1080 hp. In exchange, as mentioned above, it has a shorter range than the lower grades. However, if you are a celebrity who wants to enjoy special features such as 21-inch wheels and interior, this is the right choice for you.
