A live-action drama series of the popular PlayStation game "The Last of Us" has been officially announced.

The drama series will be broadcast and distributed by HBO, a U.S.-based network with a strong background in drama, including Game of Thrones, and will be written by Neil Druckmann, director and screenwriter of the original game, and Craig Mazin, screenwriter of HBO's Chernobyl, among others. Both are also on the executive producing team.

The series is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions, which is responsible for the visualization of PlayStation-related titles. Broadcast and distribution dates are not yet known.

The Last of Us is a survival action game released in 2013 for the PlayStation 3. It is a post-apocalypse game set in the near future in the United States, where a fungal pandemic that infects humans and makes them go berserk like zombies have decimated society.

The main characters are Joel, a middle-aged man who was once a courier who lost his young daughter during the chaos of the pandemic, and Ellie, a mysterious girl who was sent as "contraband" to be delivered. The two travel across the devastated United States to get to Ellie's destination. In other words, it's a zombie + road movie that Americans like to see.

The original game was released for the PlayStation 3 and then the PS4 remastered version the following year. It has sold a total of 20 million copies worldwide for both platforms.

The sequel, The Last of Us Part II, has been released for PS4 in 2020.

Details of the drama series version are still unknown, but chronologically it is likely to start with the first The Last of Us.

The Last of Us remaster on PS4 is also compatible with PS5. A lower-priced version of PlayStation Hits is available, which costs about 2,000 yen as standard.

The downloadable version from the PlayStation Store is currently available for 985 yen, a 55% discount during the Black Friday sale.

In this sale, the sequel, The Last of Us Part II, is also discounted by 50% to 3,795 yen, which is highly recommended if you haven't played it yet. However, since the story takes place after the previous one, be careful if you want to watch it from the drama version without prior knowledge.
